Besant Womens College


Besant Womens College was founded in the year 1977 on the visionary initiative of the Late Manel Srinivas Nayak, the then president of WNES. The institution has continued to grow under the active leadership provided by his successors, the late B. Damodar Prabhu and the late Manel Krishna Nayak.

Guided by the noble ideals of Dr. Annie Besant, the legendary Theosophist and social reformer, ours is the one of the very few colleges in the district catering exclusively to women. The institution strives to bring higher education within the reach of all girls who seek it, especially those who hail from economically and socially backward sections of society. Seeking to transform a social environment which predominantly prejudiced against women, the college is fully geared up to ensure their options in life. Besant Women’s College is affiliated to Mangalore University and presently has 1135 students on the rolls.

 

Courses

 


 

The colleges offers undergraduate programmes in Arts, Commerce, Science and Business Management streams, leading to the award of B. A., B. Com., B. Sc., and B. B. A. degree respectively, with a wide variety of subject combinations. The college also offers post graduate programmes leading to M. Com, M.Sc. degree and UGC sponsored job oriented courses in Computer Networking.

Campus

 

Besant Womens College has a campus area of 1.02 acres.The campus is centrally situated at Kodialbail in Mangalore City, which is an area teeming with students due to the many colleges which are located there. The campus has well furnished modern buildings, playground, indoor games room and other facilities for instance.

The campus is located along a main road and is easily accessible by public transport Commercial complexes in the vicinity of the college thus enable the students to meet their day-to-day requirements .

Sports

Support facilities available in the college for sports  is utilized fully. The facilities available in the sister institutions can also be used by giving a written request.

Laboratories

 

Two Computer laboratories to be shared by the Departments of Secretarial Practice, Computer Science, Data Processing and Mathematics based on a timetable. An English Lab used for enhancing the English language skills also available.
Standard Operational Procedures for handling various chemical, equipments and instruments thus strictly followed in the Physics and Chemistry labs by both students and staff .
Dead Stock register consisting of irreparable or unusable  items maintained and updated by the heads of the departments, inspected by  the IQAC and  handed over to the Maintenance officer at the end of the year. Purchases from UGC grants separately mentioned.
Outdated equipment, chemicals and instruments also discarded  appropriately.

Library

 

  1. Every student contain two Library Cards and thus they can borrow books every week.
  2. In addition ,Non return of Library book on time will attract the applicable fine.
  3. The student must show their Identity card on entry into the and sign in the register.
  4. Every student can access both online journals and magazines through computer terminals available in the Library .
  5. All students are free to use the central reading rooms available in the library, which are open from 8.15 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. for reading newspapers, magazines, journals and also for reference work.
  6. Book bank and Photocopying facilities are also available

Computer Laboratory

  1. The department of Computer Science maintains all computers and peripherals.
  2. All computer laboratories allotted to different classes hence based on timetable.
  3. Outdated computers hence disposed as per the norms laid  by the Management.

Class Rooms

 

  1. Classrooms allotted as per the student strength in each class.
  2. The Student Representatives responsible to supervise the cleanliness of the class room, maintenance of furniture and projectors. The requirements thus reported  to the maintenance officer through their class mentors.
  3. The cleanliness of the  campus supervised by  the  office bearers  of the student Council .

 

Placement

 


 

The placement preparation for the students starts off early .
The campus ambassadors organize various training programs for other students at college (excel, soft skill session, motivation talks etc.) and also brand the company .

Scholarship competitions organized by VED-SEIT companies encouraged by placement cell, where the students get an opportunity to compete and win a cash award and also an internship with the company.
Placement cell organized job description explanation sessions, resume writing, mock group discussion and mock interviews thus to enhance the confidence of the students . The Placement Cell supported the Companies in presenting their Pre-placement Talks and in conducting tests and interviews in the College Campus.
